Not long ago, a batch of supporting fastener products was fully loaded and shipped to Russia. The shipment endured harsh transport conditions including cross-border multimodal transport, long-distance overland haulage across rough terrain, and frequent transshipment and loading/unloading operations. After the goods arrived intact at the Russian partner’s factory, partial cracking and damage were found on the matching solid wood pallets during unpacking inspection.

Our Russian client sent feedback immediately, pointing out that bumpy long-haul road conditions, frigid temperatures and repeated hoisting were the main causes of pallet damage. Poor durability of the pallets directly hampered the client’s warehouse turnover efficiency at their plant.

Given the long transit distance for overseas shipments and high costs of after-sales coordination, most manufacturers would simply send replacement pallets as a perfunctory solution. However, Hongji rejected this crude after-sales approach right away.

On the very day the complaint was received, the company swiftly coordinated three core departments—after-sales, production and technology—to set up a special task force dedicated to resolving cross-border pallet issues. The project team held remote video conferences with the on-site Russian team to verify damage locations and frequency item by item, and conduct a thorough survey of the full local transportation chain. Meanwhile, they reviewed the entire operational cycle of the full container, from factory dispatch and cross-border transit to final warehousing, to identify performance weaknesses of raw wood selection and frame structures under frigid and bumpy road conditions.

Tailored to Russia’s local land transport characteristics—frigid low temperatures, rugged road conditions and frequent loading, unloading and transshipment—the technical team developed a comprehensive customized improvement and upgrade plan: In terms of raw materials, higher-grade solid wood was selected, and thicker base boards underwent integral hardening treatment to boost the wood’s cold and crack resistance from the source. For structural craftsmanship, the internal keel layout was rearranged, and critical load-bearing corners were thickened and reinforced to specifically strengthen the pallets’ three core capabilities: impact resistance, heavy load bearing and collision tolerance, fully adapting them to the extreme conditions of long-distance land transportation in Russia. Once the complete optimized design was finalized, production rolled out rapidly, and the newly upgraded pallets were seamlessly incorporated into subsequent export orders.

Shortly afterwards, the Russian client received a large repeat order and inspected the upgraded pallets on site. Having endured the long cross-country journey, none of the new pallets sustained bumps or damage, and unloading and warehousing were completed smoothly with zero losses. The client offered high praise on site: “Hongji’s optimized pallets set the quality benchmark among all our suppliers. They stay stable and reliable through long-haul transport in frigid weather and repeated handling and storage at our factory.”

This problem rectification delivered tangible quality improvements, prompting the Russian client to confirm an in-depth long-term cooperation framework. Turning a customer complaint into an opportunity to build reputation, Hongji demonstrated its original aspiration for overseas expansion through rapid response and practical technical upgrades.
